On Wednesday 21 September Troy Davis was executed by the state of Georgia for the murder of policeman Mark MacPhail in 1991.

Despite serious concerns with the evidence the state of Georgia carried out the execution and brought Mr Davis' 20 year stay of execution to an end. What the state of Georgia showed was a complete lack of compassion, humanity and acted in revenge, not justice. There is simply to justification for taking somebody's life, be it that of Troy Davis, convicted of a heinous murder oranybody else.

There is simply no statistical evidence to say that introducing a death penalty would deter people from committing crime. A report from the Death Penalty Information Centre shows that those states in the U.S. that have the death penalty have higher rates of homicide.

Troy Davis's death must not be in vain

They try to keep the death cell at Georgia diagnostic and classification prison in Jackson clean; its smell is primarily one of antiseptic. But no matter how hard they try, the stench of death is impossible to get rid of. I know this because on 24 May 1984 I was due to be executed in the same place that Troy Davis was killed on Thursday. The electric chair was prepped and my head about to be shaved, but just hours before the execution time I received a reprieve. Troy was not so lucky.

The death watch cell itself is like most cells on death row: 8ft by 6ft; a stainless steel toilet and sink combination; a slab bed welded to the wall; an inch-thick mattress with blue and white stripes and an old olive-green army blanket. On the wall there's a piece of metal that was once shined up to act as a mirror but is now scratched and marked by other inmates. You can't see your reflection anymore.

When you're there, two officers observe you at all times. One would write down my every movement, the other my every word, to report back to the warden before the time of death – to stop you from taking your own life before the state takes it from you. I could see, from where I sat, the room where the execution was to be controlled. In those days it was where the electric chair would have been turned on and now, I assume, it's where the lethal cocktail of drugs is administered. The execution chamber itself is only 10ft away.

Although no single experience in this cell is the same as another, everyone who's been there will have had to fight. Fight the depression that is constantly trying to descend upon you. Fight off the questions: can I keep going until the end? Is there a way to make peace with myself before it comes?

They give you the option of turning the TV on. I take comfort from the fact that Troy would have seen the vigils outside the prison, the protests around the world, and that he would have heard the cries of "I am Troy Davis".

I never met Troy. And deliberately did not have an active role in the campaign to save his life. I did not want his case compared to mine. I pleaded guilty to murdering 77-year-old Fred Stapleton, whom I shot dead in an armed robbery on 4 April 1974. After my sentencing, I began writing to his family asking for forgiveness. They gave it to me and it was through their backing that my death sentence was eventually commuted to life, and I was released from jail in 1992. Troy always maintained his innocence.

I attended the vigil outside the state capitol in Atlanta. Along with the 500 others present I felt the joy when we heard his execution had been postponed by the supreme court. There was singing, there was chanting. I addressed the crowd and told them what Troy said himself, that his case is more than just about him. It's about a justice system that the poor of Georgia, the African Americans of Georgia, no longer trust. A justice system that cannot accept when it is wrong, that will execute an innocent man rather than seek the truth. That won't stop to reconsider, even when witnesses say they've been pressured and coerced.

When the decision to go ahead regardless was given, the mood outside the capitol changed from joy to shock and disbelief. Troy was psychologically tortured, given a false sense of hope. I can relate, on some level. When I was on death row and my first execution date came, I sat and waited in my cell for the guards to come and take me away. It was terrifying, not knowing when or if they'd come. They never did. The legal system, which entitles all first execution dates to an automatic appeal, had never been explained to me and I did not find out until the following week that I was not to die.

The last thing I told the crowd outside the capitol was that we have the power to bring about a moratorium on the death penalty by voting out those representatives and senators who are hellbent on its use; by enacting the old saying that government is of, by and for the people. My reprieve from the electric chair came just hours before my scheduled death. It took a phone call from Mother Teresa to the supreme court and pleas from the Stapleton family. Troy Davis received no such clemency, but his death must not be in vain.

(CBS) - Exercise a little caution, folks, if you're ever outside and don't want Google Street View to catch you doing something you'd be embarrassed about.

Such was the case for this Florida woman who was prancing around in her birthday suit outside her Miami home. You can't really make out the face of the unidentified nude lady - thank goodness for pixilation.

"It used to be you could contemplatively hold a water jug naked outside of your Liberty City house without fear that your photo would end up on the internet," Miami NewTimes reports. "Used to be. Bill Cooke, the blogging brain behind Random Pixels, chuckled a lot as he told us to Google the address and then click on 'street view.' After the jump, we did a lot of zooming in and lightening and playing with contrast levels."

Not nice, but we're not going to lie - we went there, too.

When we checked again this morning at 9:45 a.m., the view of the woman's home is different from the picture above - she (and her nakedness) is no longer shown, she's been super-blurred. Even still, many news outlets like ABC News and Forbes already captured the original shot.

Plane Plunges into Stands at Reno Air Show (Video)

A vintage World War II-era fighter plane plunged into the grandstands Friday during a popular annual air show, killing at least three people, injuring more than 50 spectators and creating a horrific scene strewn with body parts and smoking debris.

The cause of the crash wasn’t immediately known, but an official with the event said there were indications that mechanical problems were at play.

The plane, flown by a renowned 74-year-old air racer and movie stunt pilot, spiraled suddenly out of control and appeared to disintegrate upon impact. Bloodied bodies were spread across the area as people tended to the victims and ambulances rushed to the scene.

Maureen Higgins of Alabama, who has been coming to the show for 16 years, said the pilot was on his third lap when he lost control.

She was sitting about 30 yards away from the crash and watched in horror as the man in front of her started bleeding after a piece of debris hit him in the head.

Houghton said at a news conference hours after the crash that there appeared to be a “problem with the aircraft that caused it to go out of control.” He did not elaborate.

He said the rest of the races have been canceled as the NTSB investigates.

KRNV-TV weatherman Jeff Martinez, who was just outside the air race grounds at the time, said the plane veered to the right and then “it just augered straight into the ground.”

“You saw pieces and parts going everywhere,” he said. “Everyone is in disbelief.”

Tanya Breining, off Hayward, Calif., told KTVU-TV in San Francisco: “It was absolute carnage. … It looked like more than a bomb exploded.”

Another witness, Ronald Sargis, said he was sitting in the box seat area near the finish line. The box seat area holds 300 to 400 people, while the main grandstands area holds several thousand.

“We could see the plane coming around the far turn — it was in trouble,” Sargis told KCRA-TV in Sacramento. “About six or seven boxes down from us, it impacted into the front row.”

He said the pilot appeared to do all he could to avoid crashing into the crowd. Response teams immediately went to work, Sargis said. After the crash Sargis went up a few rows into the grandstand to view the downed plane.

“It appeared to be just pulverized,” he said.

Leeward, the owner of the Leeward Air Ranch Racing Team, was a well-known racing pilot. His website says he has flown more than 120 races and served as a stunt pilot for numerous movies, including “Amelia” and “Cloud Dancer.”

In an interview with the Ocala (Fla.) Star-Banner last year, he described how he has flown 250 types of planes and has a particular fondness for the P-51, which came into the war relatively late and was used as a long-range bomber escort over Europe. Among the famous pilots of the hot new fighter was WWII double ace Chuck Yeager.

“They’re more fun. More speed, more challenge. Speed, speed and more speed,” Leeward said.

Houghton described Leeward as “a good friend. Everybody knows him. It’s a tight knit family. He’s been here for a long, long time,” Houghton said.

The National Championship Air Races draws thousands of people to Reno every year in September to watch various military and civilian planes race. They also have attracted scrutiny in the past over safety concerns, including four pilots killed in 2007 and 2008. It was such a concern that local school officials once considered whether they should not allow student field trips at the event.

The competition is like a car race in the sky, with planes flying wingtip-to-wingtip as low as 50 feet off the sagebrush at speeds sometimes surpassing 500 mph. Pilots follow an oval path around pylons, with distances and speeds depending on the class of aircraft.

The FAA and air race organizers spend months preparing for air races as they develop a plan involving pilot qualification, training and testing along with a layout for the course. The FAA inspects pilots’ practice runs and brief pilots on the route maneuvers and emergency procedures.

Sen. Harry Reid, D-Nev., issued a statement saying he was “deeply saddened” about the crash.

“My thoughts are with the families of those who have lost their lives and with those who were wounded in this horrific tragedy,” he said. “I am so grateful to our first responders for their swift action and will continue to monitor this situation as it develops.”

The cast of record-breaking TV show The Simpsons has scored a bumper new pay deal that guarantees the top voice actors $US400,000 ($420,000) an episode and paves the way for work to start on a record 20th season of the cultural touchstone.

The show about the dysfunctional family in the fictional town of Springfield is easily the longest running animated TV show and will now tie the western series Gunsmoke as the longest running prime-time series in TV history.

Production of the 20th season of the series was delayed for several months when the actors and 20th Century Fox TV failed to reach a pay agreement. Because of the delay, 20 episodes of the new series will be made instead of the usual 22, Variety reported today.

According to Variety the new salaries of the stars – including Dan Castellaneta who plays Homer, and Nancy Cartwright who voices Bart – would rise to $US400,000 an episode.

As part of the latest deal, Castellaneta has been named consulting producer on the series. He will serve as a writer in addition to his role as a voice performer.

The cast had asked for $US500,000 an episode, up from $US300,000 that they had been receiving.

Jennifer Anniston Annie Hughes has sounded from the cartoon "The Iron Giant."

This cartoon was born in 1999, when Jennifer has starred in "Friends."

Amazing story of courage for entire family

'Soul Surfer' was recently released on DVD. This movie is based on the true story of Bethany Hamilton. She is a surfer who lost her left arm in an accident with a shark. She was only 13 years old when the attack occurred.
This movie starts out letting us get to know Bethany and her love for surfing. This sport is her passion. The main character is played by AnnaSophia Robb. She does an amazing job showing her emotions throughout the film.
The film does not take long to get to the point of the shark attack. Luckily when the tiger shark attacks her she has other people with her and they are able to help her get to safety and call an ambulance. Bethany loses 60% of her blood in the attack and her left arm. She is lucky be alive.
At first, she tries to surf and compete but realizes that she is having problems getting up in the water like normal. A company offers Bethany a prosthetic arm, but it does not work the way she had hoped for when she puts it on. She steps away from the sport of surfing for a bit realizing that it might not be her anymore.

In real life, Bethany Hamilton is among the top women's surfers the world.
In reel life, her story, "Soul Surfer," which hit theatres today, would rank among any sport's top comeback flicks of all time. Not even Hollywood could mess up this script.
More than seven years ago, before dawn on Halloween morning, she had her left arm taken off by a 14-foot tiger shark while they were both sharing the waters off the shore of Kauai, Hawaii.
"When can I surf again?" the 13-year-old asked after her emergency surgery.
She returned almost immediately, and began to spread the word of her story, in hopes of helping others overcoming obstacles put in front of them.
Hamilton, now 21 and on the women's pro tour since 2007, talks about the reaction so far to her life story, and why it still resonates:
QUESTION: How did you gauge the reaction from the audience after you attended the "blue carpet" premiere recently in L.A.?
ANSWER: I thought everyone was stoked on it. That's really nice. I had heard it was hard to get good feedback from L.A. because everyone can be so critical about movies. It was cool. Everyone enjoyed it, and we had a wonderful night with my family and some of my best friends.
Q: As a competitive athlete now, do you find yourself actually some kind of psychological advantage over opponents? In that you're able to do what you do so well without both arms?
A: Surfing is very different from a lot of other sports, because there's so much arm movement, and having to paddle fast, and position yourself properly. For me, I really have to focus and think through my heat and study the lineup. I really don't think of it as having any kind of advantage. If anything, it can still hold me back in certain waves. But once you're up on the board, and as long as I get two good waves, I'm good. The girls I compete against, we're all good friends, so once we're on land, we don't talk much about the competition or who has advantages.

Q: Does competitive surfing at times take anything away from the pure fun of riding the board?
A: I can see where there are times when I'm so focused on getting better in a competition, I forget to just have fun and be in the ocean. I always come back to being grateful just to be able to continue surfing, especially after those long trips. I'm stoked to get back in the water. I know the name of the movie, and when you talk about 'soul surfers,' most of them you don't consider to be competitive. I interpret it as: If you find something you're passionate about, no matter what, you love it. And whether I'm competing or not, I'd be in the water loving it. Some do get burned out and lose their passion. But that's not the case for me. When the waves are good, I'll be out there all day.
Q: Have you gotten used to the media fishbowl yet, especially now, with this new wave of it, after all these years? Did it make you grow up fast?
A: Yeah, it's been crazy coming from mellow Kauai to get thrown into all this crazy, but it's all been a good experience, a way to reach more people and share our story with everything. It's a lot of hoping on planes and sleeping in hotels and getting homesick, but even worse, being away from the ocean.
Q: Reading your book again, you didn't seem to be someone who took things for granted. You're very grounded in Christianity. Is that even more the case now than back then, and would it be something that you'd have anyway because you're more you're more mature, not just because of the accident that happened?
A: My faith in Jesus has always kept me grounded me, and keeps me going, and inspires me every day. I know I'm not perfect and God loves me and He can help me get through things, guide me on life decisions. There are so many decisions that have to be made, and making the movie became very intense sometimes because we had to be on top of everything. There was some stuff we didn't approve of. But it's been awesome to be able to trust in God and know His plan is much better than the one I have.
Q: Where are the best places you've found to surf in California?
A: I love going out at 'Lowers' (Lower Trestles in Orange County), but the crowd can be intense. I just try to find a spot where it's a little less known. We always have a stop in Huntington (Beach), and it gets pretty hectic there, too, but it's also great to see all the people come together to support it. I stay with a good friend when I'm there and manage to get some quiet time around Orange County when I'm there.
Q: Even though actors play you throughout the films, primarily AnnaSophia Robb, you managed to do make an appearance in the movie, right?
A: I got to do a lot of the one-armed stunt surfing and have a cameo in one scene.
Q: What was the strangest part about seeing someone play you on the big screen? Was there a scene that you reacted to that caught you by surprise?
A: I became good friends with AnnaSophia, and the way she portrayed me, it was easier to take in.
Q: Your book is the basis for the movie, but what did Hollywood do to your story to add to it, as it tends to do sometimes?
A: There are two fictional characters. "Maria" is a competitive surfer who has a rivalry with me. But I liked that aspect of the movie. There's competitiveness, so it works and we end up friends in the movie. Then there's a friend of mine named "Taoki," and I liked how his character worked. So even if there is some fiction in there, my family and I approved of it and we really worked with the writers and directors to come up with something that moves the story as long as it doesn't water things down.
Q: What do you hope movie goers take away from "Soul Surfer," particularly those who may not know about the religious faith aspect that kind of holds your story together?
A: Of course, I want to share my faith, and my love of surfing, but I want it to be natural. I didn't want to push it on anyone. I want them to just be encouraged, see how good things can come from bad. Everyone thinks, 'How horrible,' but I see all the good that has come out of it. I'm still surfing, all over the world. It's cool to know that hopefully we can have another surfing movie on the big screen.
Q: Has anyone made comparisons to your movie and the James Franco movie, "127 Hours"?
A: Not too many, but it's funny -- we both lost our arms in the same year (2003) and the movies came out the same year, and we're still both doing the things we love. I haven't met (mountain climber Aron Ralston), but I did see his film and enjoyed it. It was cool to see the similarities in our stories.
Q: Really? How did you react to the scene where he lost his arm?
A: I like how we did the scene in 'Soul Surfer' better - it happened quick, we did the scene quick. It's not too much for kids to handle. We didn't want it to turn into a 'Jaws' movie. But in ("127 Hours"), honestly, I fast forwarded (on the DVD) that part. It was gnarly. So gnarly.

And lest you thinking defying Father Time is for the ladies, the male list is decidedly unyouthful too, with Daniel Craig, Johnny Depp, Brad Pitt, David Hasselhoff and Simon Cowell all making appearances. Note to gravity: YOU LOSE.

Now, an LA Fitness poll isn't exactly the ne plus ultra of scientific inquiry, and it's not as if Helen Mirren's off-the-charts level of foxiness is going to change Victoria's Secret fashion shows or Sports Illustrated swimsuit issues. You need only do a comparative perusal of the Maxim 100, where teenagers like Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are holding their own against a variety of Kardashians and models, to know that dewy, voluptuous youth never goes out of favor.

There's something defiantly cheeky and provocative about the LA Fitness poll results -- a little like, oh, I don't know, declaring Mirren's costar Russell Brand the sexiest man of the year. Look at us! Thinking outside the box! No wonder LA Fitness's marketing director Tony Orme told the Hollywood Reporter this week that "It's great to see the public celebrating bodies of all shapes and sizes, and proving that you really can look fabulous over 40 and 50."

That's really the point here, isn't it? A beautiful body at 18 is all but a birthright, but one at 60 is the result of damn hard work and incredibly serendipitous genetics. And indeed Mirren declared last year that her "best friend" is her Wii Fit.

Of course, a survey whose results suggest that beauty and sexiness aren't the sole terrain of the young -- and that having a rocking body is possible at any age -- is well in service of the fitness industry. Sure, Mirren, like those ankle-biting whippersnappers Macpherson and Lopez, surely has all the body, face, and hair upkeep that a woman could dream of. Simply rolling out of bed looking like a million bucks becomes an increasingly unrealistic option the older any of us get – even a woman who is still cavorting around in red bikinis and posing naked in magazines.

Yet despite the attention-getting nature of the LA Fitness poll, it serves as a reminder that beauty and sexiness don't necessarily have an expiration date. That aging is inevitable, but "letting yourself go" only has to be if you choose to make it so. That being vibrant and active is always seductive. And that the untouchable Helen Mirren can outscorch legions of females 50 years her junior.

She was recently awarded the title of Body of the Year by 2,000 fitness fanatics.

According to the New York Daily News, Miss Mirren received 17.7 per cent of the votes cast by 2,000 respondents to a survey by international gym chain LA Fitness.

t’s not everyday that Don Michael Corleone, Tony Montana, Frank Serpico and Lt. Col. Frank Slade all walk into the Supreme Courthouse in Mineola.
The embodiment of the roles, actor Al Pacino, along with fellow Oscar-winner Helen Mirren and a cast of extras and crew members numbering more than 100 descended upon the courthouse Monday and Tuesday for a location shoot for the movie about infamous music producer Phil Spector.
The still untitled HBO biopic centers around Spector (Pacino) and his relationship with his defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden (Mirren) while on trial for the murder of Lana Clarkson, who was found dead in Spector’s California mansion. Jeffrey Tambor (The Hangover, Hellboy) is also starring as Bruce Cutler, another of Spector’s defense attorneys.
Spector was convicted in 2009 of second degree murder and is currently serving a sentence of 19 years to life.
Originally Bette Midler was cast in the role of Baden, but withdrew after suffering a herniated disc.
Monday Mirren could be seen shooting part of a scene in which she arrives at the California courthouse in front of a crowd of protesters. Staged seals were placed next to the entrances of the court building with the California state seal on them and palm trees decorated the driveway to the southern entrance.
County Executive Ed Mangano also made an appearance Monday, saying that the on-location shooting would net the county an additional $10,000 in revenues. Mangano’s three sons also were present on set and made into extras as part of the crowd scene.
The rest of the footage filmed focused on Pacino's and Mirren’s interactions coming and going from the courthouse during the various trials. Spector was tried twice, the first ending in a mistrial as the result of a hung jury.
The court remained open without disruption during the entire shoot at the southern entrance.
The movie is expected to premiere on HBO sometime in 2012.

An autopsy of NFL star Bubba Smith was completed Thursday, but Los Angeles County coroner’s officials will not be able to determine the exact cause of his death this week until toxicology tests are completed.
Smith, 66, was found dead by a caretaker at his Baldwin Hills home on Wednesday afternoon, authorities said.

“At this stage I can say there was no foul play,” said Ed Winter, deputy chief of the Los Angeles County coroner's office. As is often the case in deaths with no obvious cause, Winter said coroner’s experts are conducting complex examination of levels of materials in the body to get a definitive answer.
A 6-foot-7, 280-pound defensive end, Smith was the No. 1 NFL draft pick from Michigan State University when he joined the Baltimore Colts in 1967.

He played five seasons for the Colts, which included their upset loss to the New York Jets in Super Bowl III and a victory over the Dallas Cowboys in Super Bowl V. He spent two seasons with the Oakland Raiders and two more with the Houston Oilers before a knee injury ended his career in 1976.
Smith later turned to acting and starred in the hugely popular "Police Academy" movies.
